Zhao Yun and A Dou Beginner's Guide: Merge, Summon, Hold the Line
A first-week route for Zhao Yun and A Dou: bun recruiting, grid placement, same-level merging, hero fragments and when to fire your active skills.
The App Store listing for Zhao Yun and A Dou still carries a Chinese title, which makes the game look region-locked when it is not. The client includes English among its in-app languages, so you can play it in English after install. There is no verified Google Play build as of October 2026; iOS is the confirmed client.
That out of the way, the game is a merge tower defense with one unusual win condition: you are not defending a base; you are keeping A Dou alive. Every enemy that walks past your grid takes something from him, so the run is less about total damage and more about never leaving a lane open.
The board is the build
Units sit on a grid beside the enemy path. A unit placed next to the path attacks; a unit placed two squares away mostly watches. That single geometry decides most of your early spending.
- Place new units on the first half of the path, where they get more time to shoot each enemy.
- Do not fill corners. A corner square looks safe and contributes nothing if the path never comes near it.
- Keep the squares nearest the entrance occupied before you decorate the back. The back row is where merges happen, not where damage happens.
If you have empty squares touching the path, buying a unit is usually better than upgrading one. If every path-adjacent square is full, stop recruiting and start merging.
Steamed buns are a tempo currency, not a slot machine
Steamed buns recruit soldiers, and spending them the moment you have enough leaves a wide, weak board with no way to merge upward.
Use this rule instead: spend buns when the board has open path-adjacent squares; save them when your units cannot merge and the lane is already covered. A full board of low-level units is worse than a half-full board of merged ones, because the merged unit hits harder and frees a square for the next recruit.
Early on, resist rerolling. Every reroll is a unit you did not place.
Merging: same unit, same level
Two identical units at the same level merge into one higher-level unit. That is the whole engine, with two constraints.
First, merging removes a body from the board. If the two units you merge are your only coverage on the left lane, the merge opens a gap for a few seconds. Merge the pair that sits where your other units can cover, not the pair holding a lane alone.
Second, merges can crit. A crit merge gives you a better result than the normal step, which is a bonus rather than a plan. Do not hold pairs hoping for a crit; the lost coverage costs more than the crit gains.
A practical order:
- Merge duplicates on the back row first, where losing a body matters least.
- Then merge duplicates on the front row, one lane at a time.
- Never merge across lanes if it leaves the middle of the path uncovered.
Fragments and the hero summon
Heroes are not recruited with buns. You collect character fragments (Zhao and Yun are the pair the title points at) and assemble them into a summon, your biggest single power spike.
Pick one hero and collect toward it. Fragments arrive from stage clears and mode rewards, and a half-finished second hero does nothing for you.
Once the hero is summoned, treat it as a fixed piece of your board rather than a unit to merge into. Build the rest of the lane around what the hero covers.
Equipment rarity: the overflow problem
Equipment comes in white, green, blue, purple and orange. The higher tiers are strictly better per slot, which sounds simple until your inventory fills with purple and orange drops faster than you can use them. Reviews of the game call this out, and it is a real bookkeeping problem rather than a difficulty one.
The fix is to stop treating every drop as an upgrade:
- Keep the best item per slot and stop upgrading the lower rarity in that slot. An upgraded blue is still a blue.
- Do not hold duplicates "for later." If two pieces do the same job, the second is inventory noise.
- Equip orange over purple immediately, even if the orange is unleveled. Base stats usually matter more than the levels you sank into the piece it replaces.
When to press the active skills
The game gives you actives such as an attack-speed talisman, a brush and a divine weapon. They are not rotation tools; they are answer buttons.
- Attack-speed talisman: use it when your lane has enough units but not enough damage: a boss wave, or a stretch where a tanky enemy is walking through your coverage.
- Brush and divine weapon: hold them for the moment A Dou starts losing health, or for a wave that has already broken through one lane. Using them on a wave you were going to survive anyway is the same as not having them.
- Never fire all three at once. Stagger them so the second one is still available when the first expires.
The rule: if you cannot say in one sentence what an active fixes, save it.
The first-week checklist
- [ ] Set the game to English in the options if it launched in Chinese.
- [ ] Fill path-adjacent squares before upgrading anything.
- [ ] Merge back-row duplicates first, one lane at a time.
- [ ] Choose one hero and collect only that hero's fragments.
- [ ] Equip the best rarity per slot and stop leveling lower tiers.
- [ ] Clear chapter stages until the boss stage teaches you the wave pattern before pushing endless or arena.
FAQ
Is Zhao Yun and A Dou playable in English?
Yes. The store title remains Chinese, but English is listed among the in-app languages, so the interface can be played in English after install.
Is there an Android version?
No verified Google Play build exists as of October 2026; the confirmed client is the iOS release.
Which units should I merge first?
Duplicates on the back row, then duplicates on the front row one lane at a time. Never merge the only two units covering a lane, because the merge briefly opens a gap.
Why is my inventory full of purple and orange equipment?
Higher-rarity drops outpace your ability to use them, which is a common complaint in reviews. Keep the best piece per slot, equip orange over purple, and stop upgrading gear you intend to replace.
How this page was checked
Written for Mini Game Guides and last verified on Oct 23, 2026. Store names, release dates and platform availability were checked against the official listing; gameplay advice is based on the mechanics described on that listing and the sources below.
